You're Not Imagining It

Can't find tradespeople? You're not the only one.

Months of job ads. A couple of recruitment agencies. Maybe labour hire on top. And the role is still open. If that's where you're at, it's not something you're doing wrong β€” nearly half of all skilled trade vacancies in Australia go unfilled. There is a way through it, and it doesn't start with more job ads.

A note on visa guidance: RecruitUp Global is a recruitment agency, not a migration agent. All content on this site is for general educational purposes only. For immigration advice or to lodge a visa application, consult a MARA-registered migration agent. RecruitUp specialises in finding and placing qualified South African tradespeople with Australian employers who are ready to sponsor β€” we handle the recruitment side, not the visa lodgement.

Sound Familiar?

What it actually feels like to be short-staffed

This isn't a hiring-technique problem. Here's what we hear from Australian employers before they talk to us.

You've done everything right

Job ads, two or three agencies, maybe labour hire on top β€” and the role is still open. That's not a sign you're bad at hiring. It's a sign the local pool is smaller than the demand.

You're turning down work

Jobs you'd normally take are going to competitors, or getting pushed out months, because there's nobody to put on them.

Your team is covering the gap

The people you do have are picking up the overtime, working the Saturdays β€” and you know that's not sustainable for much longer.

Deadlines and reputation are on the line

Clients don't care why a job's late. Every week a seat stays empty is a week closer to a customer you disappoint.

You tried overseas once and gave up

Maybe you looked into sponsoring someone a while back, hit a wall of paperwork and agents, and decided it wasn't worth it.

You know the skills exist β€” just not here

You're not wrong. They exist. They're just not in the local applicant pool you've been fishing from.

The Real Cause

It's not your hiring. It's the pool.

Australia's Skill Level 3 trades recorded a 54.5% fill rate (Jobs and Skills Australia, Occupation Shortage Report, December quarter 2025) β€” meaning close to half of all trade vacancies went unfilled nationally. The apprenticeship pipeline hasn't kept pace with retirements, and mega-projects across energy, defence and housing are all drawing from the same thin pool of workers at once. Advertising harder into a pool that's already this shallow won't change the result.

Before You Write This Off

The questions every employer asks first

Won't this cost a fortune?+
Sponsoring a worker is a one-time cost, typically $10,000–$16,000 all-in. Compare that to what the empty seat is already costing you in lost work, overtime and labour hire premiums β€” for most employers that's the more expensive option, not the cheaper one.
What if they just leave after six months?+
Workers who relocate their family across the world for a sponsored role aren't testing the water β€” they're building a life here. In practice, retention on these placements runs well beyond the industry norm for local hires.
I'll get the compliance wrong+
You don't handle it. RecruitUp coordinates the recruitment side and works with MARA-registered migration agents who manage the visa and compliance end to end.
I'm too small a business to sponsor someone+
Sole operators and small trade businesses sponsor overseas workers all the time. Size isn't the barrier β€” a genuine, unfillable local vacancy is the requirement, and that's most of the businesses we talk to.
Am I taking a job off an Australian?+
No. Every role has to be genuinely advertised to the local market first β€” it's the law. Sponsorship only comes into play once that search has come up empty.
What It Looks Like Fixed

One good hire changes the whole picture

  • βœ“A skilled, work-ready tradesperson on site β€” reliable, and there to stay.
  • βœ“Your existing crew gets their weekends back.
  • βœ“You start saying yes to the work you've been turning away.
  • βœ“Sourcing, vetting and the visa partners β€” handled, without you touching the paperwork.
The Proof

400+ pre-vetted South African tradespeople

Trade-tested, work-ready, and screened before an employer ever sees a name. Direct employer-to-employee placement β€” not labour hire, not on-hire β€” with real Australian employers who've already made the hire and told us how it went.
