Stage-by-Stage Processing Times
75th and 90th percentile times published by the Department of Home Affairs, current as of 1 July 2026.
Processing times change frequently. Always check the official Department of Home Affairs processing times page for current figures before making decisions based on timing.
Stage 1 — Sponsorship
| Application type | 75% within | 90% within |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Business Sponsor (new application) | 1–3 months | 3–5 months |
Sponsorship approval is valid for 5 years. Employers who already hold active SBS approval skip this stage entirely.
Stage 2 — Nomination

Factors That Impact Processing Time
Published times are averages — these factors can significantly move your individual outcome.
Application Completeness
The Department prioritises applications that are 'decision-ready' — complete, consistent, with all documents submitted upfront. Requests for Further Information (RFIs) add weeks or months.
Specialist vs Core Skills Stream
The Specialist Skills stream (roles paying above $175,000 p.a.) consistently processes faster. If a position qualifies, the time saving is meaningful.
Health Assessment Timing
Candidates who complete their medical before lodging the visa application typically see faster outcomes. In South Africa, approved panel physicians operate in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Pretoria.
SAPS Police Clearance
SAPS clearance certificates must be current at lodgement. Turnaround varies from 3 weeks to 3 months. Apply before the employer's nomination is lodged — never be the bottleneck.
Existing Sponsorship Status
Employers who already hold active SBS approval save the entire Stage 1 processing period. For repeat sponsors, the total timeline is materially shorter.
Occupation Demand
Some high-demand occupations may attract faster case officer allocation. Published processing times remain the most reliable guide.
Decision-Ready Checklist
The Department prioritises decision-ready applications. Here is what to have prepared before lodgement.
All ImmiAccount forms lodged as complete and consistent
Health examinations completed before or at lodgement (not after)
Police clearance certificates current and certified
Labour Market Testing evidence in order
Payroll records and business financials for the nomination
Skills assessment outcome letter from TRA (where required)
Employment references and qualifications documentation
Frequently Asked Questions
Can all three stages be processed simultaneously?
No. The stages must proceed in sequence: sponsorship must be approved before a nomination is lodged, and the nomination must be approved before the worker can apply for the visa. The total end-to-end time is the sum of all three stages.
Why are Core Skills processing times longer since December 2024?
The December 2024 transition from the TSS framework to the Skills in Demand visa created a processing backlog at the Department of Home Affairs. The Department has indicated it prioritises 'decision-ready' applications. Check immi.homeaffairs.gov.au for current published figures.
What is a Request for Further Information (RFI)?
An RFI is issued by the Department of Home Affairs when they need additional documentation or clarification before deciding on an application. Responding to an RFI pauses the processing clock and adds weeks or months to the timeline. Submitting a complete, well-documented application upfront is the most effective way to avoid one.
How long is SBS approval valid?
Standard Business Sponsor approval is valid for 5 years and covers multiple nominations during that period. Employers who renew or already hold active approval skip the Stage 1 processing time entirely.
