RecruitUp Global is a recruitment agency, not a migration agent. Genine and the RecruitUp team specialise in connecting skilled candidates with Australian employers who can sponsor them — they do not provide visa or immigration advice. For migration matters, RecruitUp works alongside registered MARA migration agents.
The Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa requires applicants to demonstrate a minimum level of English Language Requirement before a visa is granted. For the vast majority of South African tradespeople, this requirement is achievable — English is a working language in South Africa, and the minimum score threshold is set below general proficiency.
That said, the test itself takes time to book, sit, and receive results for. Candidates who leave it too late create unnecessary delays in what is already a multi-stage process.
This page explains which tests the Department of Home Affairs accepts, what the minimum scores are, who is exempt, and what this requirement means in practice for South African tradespeople coming through RecruitUp.
For the full list of 482 visa eligibility criteria, see our 482 Visa Requirements guide. For the broader overview of how employer-sponsored recruitment works, see the 482 Visa Australia hub.
Reminder: This is general educational information, not immigration advice. English proficiency requirements are assessed by the Department of Home Affairs on a case-by-case basis. Consult a registered migration agent (MARA) before acting on any information on this page.
The Department of Home Affairs accepts five approved English language tests for the 482 Core Skills stream. All tests must have been sat within three years of the visa application date.

The thresholds above are set at a relatively accessible level. An IELTS score of 5.0 average with a minimum of 4.5 per band is described by the British Council as “modest” English — indicating the ability to communicate in familiar situations, with some difficulty in unfamiliar ones.
This is intentional. The 482 visa English requirement is not designed to test academic or professional fluency — it is designed to establish that the worker can function in an Australian workplace. For tradespeople who have been working, communicating, and operating in English throughout their careers, the floor is not the challenge. Preparation and timing are.
Citizens of the following countries are automatically exempt from the English language requirement for the 482 visa:
South Africa is not on this list. South African applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the five approved tests, unless another exemption applies. Additional exemptions may apply in specific circumstances — a registered migration agent can advise on whether any alternative pathway is available for a particular applicant.
Of the five accepted tests, IELTS General Training and PTE Academic are the most commonly used by South African tradespeople applying through the 482 pathway. Here is a practical comparison:
IELTS General Training
PTE Academic
OET is designed for healthcare workers and is rarely the right choice for a trade occupation.
Recommendation: Either IELTS General Training or PTE Academic is appropriate. The choice comes down to test centre availability, how quickly you need results, and personal preference for test format. Book whichever you can sit soonest.
The short answer: as early as possible, ideally before a specific employer is involved.
The 482 process involves multiple stages — employer sponsorship approval, nomination, and then the visa application itself. The visa application stage is where English test results are submitted. However, waiting until the nomination is approved to book a test adds weeks or months of delay to what is already a lengthy process.
Candidates who have a current, valid English test result on file can move into the visa application stage immediately once the nomination clears. Candidates who still need to sit a test at that point are the bottleneck — and they are putting an employer’s sponsored position on hold while they wait for results.
A valid IELTS or PTE result is good for three years from the date the test was sat. There is no downside to doing it early.
If a candidate does not meet the minimum score threshold on their first attempt, the straightforward option is to resit the test. There is no waiting period between attempts, and results improve with practice and preparation.
If the minimum is not achieved across multiple attempts, the 482 Core Skills pathway remains unavailable until the requirement is met. A migration agent can advise on whether any alternative pathway or exemption applies in specific circumstances.
Genine Raats, RecruitUp’s Head of Operations, arrived in Australia in 2017 on a Subclass 457 visa — the predecessor to the 482. Her partner, a qualified electrician, came through the same employer-sponsored pathway. Both are South African. Neither found the English requirement to be the difficult part.
That experience reflects what we see across our placements. South African tradespeople who have completed their trade training and worked in industry — where instruction, safety documentation, and supervisory communication are in English — typically score comfortably above the 4.5–5.0 band floor without intensive preparation.
The candidates we see delayed by English requirements are usually those who leave the test to the last moment, not those who genuinely struggle with the language. Book the test early, treat it as a process step rather than an obstacle, and it rarely becomes one.
Either is accepted. IELTS General Training is sufficient — there is no requirement to sit the Academic version for the 482 visa.
English test results must have been obtained within the three years before the visa application is lodged. A result obtained more than three years ago cannot be used and the test must be resit.
No. South Africa is not on the list of exempt countries (UK, USA, Canada, NZ, and Ireland). South African applicants must provide valid English test results as part of their visa application.
Yes, if it is still within the three-year validity period. There is no requirement for the test to have been sat specifically for the current application — only that it is current and meets the minimum score requirements.
The visa application will be assessed as incomplete or refused on the basis of not meeting the English language requirement. The Department may request additional evidence or issue a notice of intention to refuse. A migration agent can advise on how to respond in that situation.
When we assess candidates for placement, we ask about English test status early in the process. Candidates who have a current test result are ready to move when an employer is ready to nominate them. Candidates who don’t have one yet are encouraged to book a test before we match them with a role.
This is not a gatekeeping measure — it is practical process management. An employer who finds the right candidate and proceeds to nomination does not want to wait three months for an English test result. Candidates who are prepared go further, faster.
For tradespeople: If you’re exploring employer-sponsored work in Australia and want to understand whether your background makes you a viable candidate, register your interest and we’ll walk you through what we typically look for — including where you stand on the documentation side.
For employers: If you’re looking to sponsor a South African tradesperson through the 482 pathway, talk to our team. We pre-screen candidates for placement readiness, including their English test status.
